Natural Selection

We dickered over coffee
as cowboys often will,
but ol' "Bones" said his price was firm,
at a hundred dollar bill.

We wandered out to the barn,
to choose which puppy I would take,
look each one over carefully,
judge what kind of dog they'll make!

There's a hundred old wives tales,
on how to choose a dog that's tough,
by looking in their eye or mouth,
or grabbing them by the scruff.

A good cow dog must be bold,
smart and faithful as can be,
so I sat down and waited,
To see which puppy would choose me!
